watanabe coffee or WA-Café offers freshly made brewed, gourmet Syphon Coffee, Dutch style cold brewed coffee & ‘Uji-Maccha’ premium Japanese Green Tea from Kyoto, selection of traditional Japanese and Western fusion cuisine. Compared to other coffee shops around Orchard area, WATANABE Coffee is modest and familiar. Japanese & Western seems to be a unique combination and they can actually give Starbucks a run for their money with their homelier interior - wood decors, bricked walls, & dimmed lighting instil a rich atmosphere & a relaxing ambience. They should drop the sacks in my opinion, it's kinda off and not really contributing any homey vibe to it.
It's tough not to get your foot on the door of this cafe, why? Their desserts are the culprit! I've been to this cafe only twice and here's my thoughts on some of their offerings.
HOKKAIDO OGURA TOAST (SGD6.80)
I love red bean on its own, so whenever an establishment makes red bean bread, red bean cake, red bean tart, I just need to try it out. This one's no exception, it's the whipped cream that made it a star. I doubt that it's homemade (I'd bet my life this is even canned, LOL) but nevertheless it's addictive.
This is a Nagoya specialty I believe. The crunch of the lightly toasted bread and those red beans I can sink my teeth into is a real pleasure.
FRENCH FRIES WITH TRUFFLE SALT (SGD10.80)
Not too heavy on the truffle, evenly coated and loved that the fries were crispy when it was served to us. If you're not a truffle-ddict, it won't hurt to give this one a try.
Did you click on this post to see if their coffee's good? I have tried 3 different cups on 2 occasions.
The Dutch Style Cold Brew wins it for me.
WA CAFE COFFEE (SGD6.80)
I personally love the coffee at first sip, it's a break from the usual Starbucks cuppa but it's not the type of cup I'd re-order on my next visit. I wished it was more robust & nutty.
DUTCH STYLE COLD BREWED (SGD6.80)
The water-drip, slow-brewed coffee --> worth the wait! I fell for this deeply rich flavoured coffee. This is also known as dutch or kyoto style coffee, it uses a unique drip method to brew a perfect cup of coffee unlike regular cold brew that uses the immersion technique.
JAPANESE MATCHA LATTE (SGD7.80)
A nice and smooth cup of matcha latte here, nothing of that crazy insane fake matcha powdery taste.
SALMON CARPACCIO (SGD13.80)
This salmon appetizer was delish, a must-try especially for salmon lovers! The sauce somehow has this certain acidity that balanced out the fatty flavors in the salmon.
BAKED RICE WITH HAMBURG STEAK (SGD20.80)
A DISH AKIN TO SALISBURY STEAK, THIS ONE IS SERVED WITH A BED OF RICE, TOO HEAVY BUT THAT EGG HAS ITS OWN REDEMPTION. JIGGLY AND SMOOTH, AAH THANKS MR. YOLK-IE FOR BEING A MELT IN YOUR MOUTH GOODNESS.
BEEF STEW WITH BAGUETTE(SGD19.80)
A pot with an uber rich, heavy sauce I don't know how else to finish this dish. I dipped my baguette just about 2x and that "umay" factor came in. Beautifully presented but this one is meant to be shared with another 4-6 people. They weren't stingy on those beef chunks you see! But going overboard with the sauce had me hearing ze beef chunks screaming from intense drowning.
The dishes and coffee review's made in random order, however if you'll ask me what's a must try, I'd say the Dutch Style Cold Brew Coffee.
If you got extra bucks to spend, go for the Ogura Toast.
